United States takes an active role in Greek Civil War
In his doctrine, President Truman announced that the United States would take an active part in the Greek Civil War. He offered both economic and military aid to Greece--and Turkey--in order to prevent the spread of Soviet control. The Greek Civil War was fought between the United States and United Kingdom-backed Greek government army and the Democratic Army of Greece (DSE), which was the military branch of the Greek Communist Party (KKE) and was backed by Albania, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia. The United States’ involvement displayed their opposition of Communism and the U.S.S.R. gaining power. While Truman wished to prevent Soviet domination and stabilize Greece, his declaration also created further divisions between the two superpowers. His actions were the root of many later events and the overall feel and tension of the Cold War.
